The Royal Political-match

Anne of Cleves
by Hans Holbein

Inorder to strengthen the British
relations with fellow-Protestant
European states,
it was decided that the King's
future marriage would
serve that purpose.
Royal ambassadors were sent
to seek the candidates
and the Royal painter,
Hans Holbein,
was sent to draw their portraits.

The King chose Anne of Cleves,
which is a Protestant little "Princedom".
Unfortunately, when Anne arrived
in January of 1540,
he decided she was to ugly,
and she skillfully persuaded
him to divorce her,
before he'd reach her neck.

The kings advisors were soon
required to find
a religious solution,
and this time Thomas Cromwell
lost his head.
The painter was sacked.
